Spektr are a mysterious French black metal group (their members go under the names kl.K. and Hth) whose latest album, Cypher, comes out next week in the US. It’s their first release since 2007’s Mescalyne EP, and their last full-length was 2006’s The Near Death Experience. Unlike previous releases, Cypher is entirely instrumental, except for some sampled voices. You can hear a stream of the second track, “Teratology,” below. It’s pretty interesting stuff – sure, there are buzzsaw guitars and blasting (programmed, I think) drums, but there are also moments of jazzy upright bass, swooping psychedelic keyboards, and a guitar riff that sounds shockingly like Pink Floyd circa “One of These Days.” If you wish black metal sounded more like Main, Spektr may be the band for you.
